Abstract

The Taiwan authorities, in defiance of stern warnings from the mainland, push stubbornly for Taiwan’s membership in the UN. The U.S. government has responded in a surprisingly quick manner. The U.S. reaction is made out of the following deliberations: its global strategy, its policies toward the Taiwan Straits, the mutually- dependent China- U.S. relations, its domestic politics, U.S.- Taiwan relations and other ways of looking at things.
