Abstract
The emergence of regional trade agreements in East Asia is likely to stimulate the establishment of an East Asian Free Trade Area ,covering both Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. During the process of building a new regional system in East Asia ,the regional trade agreements externally will undermine the three American pillars in East Asia of balancing power ,an alliance system ,and effective trade policies. If America continues to base its East Asian policies on a geopolitical mentality , most likely it will fail in its future interactions with those East Asian states that are evolving toward a free trade area.
