Zhao Kejin

World Economy and World Politics, No.7, 2006

Abstract

With the rise of globalization and global civil society, international institutions have encountered a legitimacy crisis.Since the 20 th century, aswe all know, there has been a trend of institutionalization in international relations, and its major driving force has been the idea of multilateralism. The rise of a global civil society and its pressures on international institutions has prompted international institutions to change from the old multilateralism to the new multilateralism. In terms of the legitimacy of international institutions in the global era, the author concludes that the future pattern of international institutions will possibly comprise an interaction among intergovernmental institutions, nongovernmental institutions, and state institutions.
