Zhao Minghao,State Identity, the Global South, and the U.S. Competitive Strategy towards China,The Chinese Journal of American Studies,No.2,2024,pp.37-56
The influence of the global South in the world economy, finance, andsecurity affairs is increasing, and it is recognized as an important force inthe changing international order. For the purpose of deepening great powercompetition, the United States has stepped up its pressure on China over the issue of the global South. The power play over the state identity betweenChina and the U.S. has become more prominent. By questioning and weak⁃ening China's status as a developing country, the United States cannot onlyimpede China's economic development, but also alienate China from theglobal South. The United States seeks to capitalize on the contradictionswithin the global South to divide and rule, and it supports India in itsstruggle with China for leadership of the global South. The United States u⁃tilizes mechanisms such as the Mineral Security Partnership and the Part⁃nership for Atlantic Cooperation to counterbalance China's relations with therelevant developing countries, and intensifies its efforts to draw developingcountries into its fold in such areas as energy transition, food security, public health and infrastructure. This situation would shape the long⁃termgame between China and the United States, and also pose new challengesto China's global diplomacy. China needs to recognize the difficulties facedby the global South itself and its pragmatic orientation of “ non⁃Western butnot anti⁃Western” . It should improve the cooperation with developing coun⁃tries and continuously increase its influence on the global South.
