Wang Hao, "Trump Phenomenon and the Logic and Trend of the Evolution of U.S. Politics," Fudan University Journal of Social Sciences, No.6, 2017
【Abstract】Trump phenomenon and the trend of a new round of partisan realignment that was reflected in the 2016 presidential election, indicate that the U.S. politics is entering into a new era. This article argues that the possibility of this new round of partisan realignment could be clearly seen in the split of Democrats' traditional Northeast coalition,in which the so-called Rustbelt around the Great Lakes that mainly consists of white working class people, turned to the Republican Party in this election. This new trend means the end of the new gilded age that was started by the Reagan Revolution in the 1980s. In the new era, nativism may replace neoliberalism and pluralism, and the classic liberalism may again dominate U.S. politics, making it featured by reindustrialization, laisser-faire and WASP elitism.
【Key Words】Trump phenomenon; U.S. politics; partisan realignment; classic liberalism
