Abstrsct

Around the time of Mainland Chinaps first nuclear test , the views held by the U. S. government and the Taiwan authorities greatly diverged on the impact of Mainland Chinaps nuclear capabilities and the necessary countermeasures to be adopted against it . The Johnson administration refused Chiang Kai - shekps suggestion to initiate a military attack on Beijing , along with his demand for more military assistance to establish a complete air - defense system. On a deeper level , it not only indicates the different understandings of the nuclear deterrence between the U. S. and the Taiwan authorities , it also reflects the fact that the U. S. policy toward Taiwan is always subordinate to its policy towards Mainland China. It will always be a foolps paradise for Taiwan separatists to seek the islandps independence by relying on the U. S. support , especially as the cooperation with Mainland China has increasingly grown in importance to the United States.
