From May 4 to 12, 2025, Professor Zhao Minghao, Deputy Director of the Center for American Studies at the Institute of International Studies, Fudan University, visited the United States to participate in a series of academic conferences and engage in think tank exchanges.
During his visit, Prof. Zhao attended multiple dialogues, including the U.S.-China Relations Dialogue and the China-U.S.-Japan-South Korea Quadrilateral Dialogue organized by the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP). Participants included scholars and experts from the Brookings Institution, U.S. Congressional Research Service, Asia Society, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Stimson Center, Yale University, Princeton University, Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Gakushuin University, Hosei University, Korea National Diplomatic Academy, Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

While in New York, Prof. Zhao visited the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and held discussions with Vice President Jan Carol Berris and other American representatives. On May 8, he visited Yale University, where he exchanged views with scholars from the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies, the Department of History, and the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School.
Following that, Prof. Zhao traveled to San Diego, California, to attend a symposium on “Climate Issues and U.S.-China Relations” hosted by the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The event brought together scholars from Georgetown University, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, George Washington University, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and other institutions. In addition, Prof. Zhao was invited to join a public forum hosted by UCSD’s School of Global Policy and Strategy, where he discussed China-U.S. relations with fellow scholars and responded to questions from the audience.

Beyond the academic discussions, Prof. Zhao also engaged in exchanges with several former senior officials from government and international organizations, including former U.S. Treasury Under Secretary Jeffrey Shafer, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Susan Shirk, former Acting Assistant Secretary of State Susan Thornton, former White House National Security Council official Josh Cartin, historian Julian Gewirtz, former Director-General for Policy Planning at South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lee Sang-hyun, and former Mexican Ambassador to the WTO Roberto Zapata.
