2024-05-30

From May 20 to 28, the Center for American Studies at Fudan University (CAS Fudan) organized a student delegation to Hong Kong and Shenzhen to participate in the 2024 China-U.S. Student Dialogue. The event aimed to enhance the understanding of important issues in China-U.S. relations among young students from Chinese and American universities through face-to-face exchanges, promoting communication and mutual trust between Chinese and American youth. The event was launched by the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues at Georgetown University, with strong support from the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The China-U.S. Exchange Foundation included this activity in its CUSEF Next Gen program.

As one of the core participants in this event, CAS Fudan organized the student delegation to engage in deep exchanges with students from Georgetown University, the University of California, San Diego, Fudan University, and Peking University. This field trip symbolized the continuation of the Georgetown-UCSD-Fudan-PKU online student series dialogues held over the past 12 months. During the online exchange session, students from the four universities focused on the topic of Responsibilities and Prospects for China-U.S. Cooperation in the Global South, covering aspects such as global governance, climate change, public health, economic trade, development aid, and peace and security.

During the 9-day visit, Chinese and American students explored China-U.S. relations through lectures, group discussions, and visits. In the presentation session, students presented the outcomes of their year-long online discussions and field trip, offering innovative ideas and solutions to alleviate frictions and challenges in China-U.S. relations, contributing youthful wisdom to promoting cooperation and development in the Global South. During the event, students visited various institutions such as the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, the Chief Executive's Policy Unit, South China Morning Post, the American Chamber of Commerce, Goldman Sachs, BYD Company, and Nanshan Energy Eco-Park in Shenzhen to gain a deep understanding of local and Greater Bay Area social development dynamics. Additionally, students engaged in ping-pong activities during their free time, in remembrance of ping-pong diplomacy, enhancing friendships and promoting cultural exchange through sports.

The Fudan delegation comprised students from various fields, including international relations, environmental science, economics, and medicine, providing professional perspectives and diverse viewpoints for the China-U.S. student dialogue. The event not only promoted the understanding of global issues among China-U.S. students but also fostered their sense of responsibility and mission as future builders of China-U.S. relations. CAS Fudan will continue to support China-U.S. student dialogues, actively promoting youth exchange and cooperation to address global challenges jointly.
