Dear graduates of the Class of 2025,Respected professors, families, and friends from near and far:
Good afternoon!
Today is a day to remember. We gather here to celebrate your journey and your new beginning. As a faculty representative, I am filled with pride and joy as I offer my warmest congratulations to each and every one of you. Congratulations on completing your studies and stepping confidently into a new chapter of life!
Some days in life are for striving forward; others are for looking back with reverence. Today is one of those rare and precious days. You leave Fudan carrying the weight of knowledge, the echoes of friendship, and the imprint of youth. Ahead lies a world vast and open.
Right now, you may feel excited, emotional, or even uncertain. But the true turning points in life often don’t happen in grand ceremonies like this—they happen in quiet perseverance. What truly shapes the depth of one’s life is not the speed of the sprint, but the direction of the walk—not fleeting passion, but enduring resolve.
And behind that resolve, there are always those who support you silently—your family and loved ones. Every step forward you've taken has been made possible by their silent sacrifices; every leap you’ve made has been buoyed by their unwavering love. Please allow me to take this moment to express heartfelt thanks and deep respect to all the families and friends here today.
Standing here at this podium, I find myself deeply moved. I first stepped onto the Fudan campus in 1989. What I thought would be a few years of study turned into more than three decades of life, learning, and teaching. I transitioned from science to the humanities, from student to teacher—and, as some might say, I’ve been “under observation” at Fudan ever since.
So today, I speak to you not only as a professor, but also as a “long-term resident” of this university, someone who has “never truly graduated”. At this special moment, allow me to share with you three simple words. They may be plain on the surface, but they carry our sincerest blessings and our highest hopes for your future.
First: Be a person of warmth.
As the Analects of Confucius say, “Only in the cold of winter does one realize how the pine and cypress remain evergreen.” In a world full of noise and distraction, may you always hold onto your sincerity. Do not be blinded by vanity, nor retreat in the face of indifference.
Care for those around you. Care about public affairs. Use your knowledge to bring a little more light into the world.
May you remain clear-minded in chaos, kind-hearted in the crowd, and quietly radiant even in silence.
Second: Be a person of resilience.
As the ancient poet Qu Yuan wrote, “The road ahead is long and winding; I will search high and low.” Life will not always be smooth. True growth often arises from the choices we make in times of difficulty.
So don’t fear failure—it is the most honest companion of success. Real strength is not about never falling, but about getting back up every time you do. It is not about never doubting, but about regaining your resolve even after hesitation.
May you stand tall in the storm, forge your will through challenges, and stay your course in life’s ebb and flow.
Third: Be a person of responsibility.
As Lin Zexu once wrote, “If my country needs me, I shall dedicate my life, regardless of personal gain or loss.”In today’s deeply connected world, the future of humanity and the fate of nations are shaped by the actions of individuals.
You are graduating from one of the most dynamic and globally engaged academic communities—this is both an honor and a call to action. You carry with you not only an understanding of institutions and insight into global affairs, but also the potential to shape the future.Wherever you go, never forget our school’s motto: “Excellence for the Public.”Excellence is a capacity; public-mindedness is a calling. May you seek personal value, while also dedicating yourselves to the betterment of communities, nations, and the global society.
May you carry the people in your heart, the world in your sight, and the weight of responsibility on your shoulders.
This world is filled with uncertainty—geopolitical shifts, technological upheaval, environmental crises—but this is also your stage. Our era needs both dreamers who look to the stars and doers who keep their feet on the ground.
Dear students, what Fudan has given you is more than just knowledge, critical thinking, and rational insight. It has also given you a spirit of leadership, of standing at the forefront of the times.
So may you go forth in life both grounded and visionary; dare to innovate, but never forget your roots. May you walk through storms with calm, and remain true to yourself amid the clamor of the world. May you always take root deep in the earth, and grow boldly toward the sky.
May the path ahead be filled with blossoms—and may you always keep the heart of youth. May your eyes shine with light, your heart burn with passion, and your feet walk steadily. May you live up to your youth, your era, and your truest self.
Dear graduates, as you leave campus today, you are not saying goodbye to Fudan — you are carrying the Fudan spirit into the world.
No matter where you are from, or where life takes you, Fudan will always be your home.
The journey ahead is vast, and everything is possible. Come back home often—even if it’s just for a cafeteria meal.
Thank you all.
